Consumed is a British documentary about the psychological basis of what the filmmakers call the “weird mental illness called consumerism” and “a kind of collective psychosis in which people value acquiring objects more than their children, partners or friends.” The film maintains that there are unique evolutionary features in the human species that make us uniquely susceptible to pro-consumption messaging.

The documentary begins by emphasizing the grave implications of “unfettered” consumerism on humankind’s ability to survive on this planet – both from the perspective of ecosystem destruction and growing resource scarcity.

    This is a great article. Mericans are sick, they must have this and that whether they can afford it or not. And we have been made this way by the constant bombardment of mind control advertising.

    This has nothing to do with evolution. God I am so sick of that meaningless and worthless term!

    This has to do with Edward Bernays and the like, programming people to be insane consumers. This isn’t in our nature, I don’t believe that for a moment. This is taught and programmed in to us from a child on up!

      This is so true! The reality is that it is against our nature, which is why society is deteriorating, families have broken down and physical and mental health issues are so pervasive.

      Consumerism kills the soul and leaves a depressed, stressed out, anxiety-laden zombie who is forced to self-medicate through whatever means available in order to function.
